Understanding Diamond Cut

If you are on the market for a lovely diamond, you need to pay close attention to the cut of a particular diamond.  In the final analysis, the actual cut of a diamond determines how the gemstone will reflect light.  The manner in which a diamond reflects light is what is responsible for the way in which a diamond sparkles.

Diamond Cut

A well cut diamond is one that is cut in such a manner so that the maximum amount of life will be reflected from each of the facets as well as through the top of the diamond itself.  Generally speaking, a higher number of facets will increase the sparkle and brilliance of a particular diamond.

If a diamond is cut in too shallow a fashion, it will not be particularly brilliant as light will escape through the bottom of the stone.  In fact, a diamond cut in such a manner may end up appearing dull.  Obviously, a person does not want a diamond to appear dull.  On the other hand, if a diamond is cut too deeply, light will inappropriately escape from the sides of the diamond – again, making the gemstone less brilliant.

In the final analysis, diamonds simply do not show all of their beauty in their natural, rough state.  They must be cut and polished appropriately to demonstrate the sparkle, brilliance and fire that diamonds are known for around the world and throughout history.
